This can help you understand exactly what they are looking for and help vanquish writers block. Take advantage of your universitys study abroad office and/or scholarship and fellowship office.
My advice to future applicants would be to start the application EARLY! Organize your thoughts together for those essays and have people read them over and look at them. My advice for applying for the Gilman: Think of a service project that is somehow unique to you and your past. Describe it in extreme detail. Students can even choose to participate in both a short term and long term program, which would allow to obtain more college credits. This would also allow the student to see more of the country they are visiting, and imerse themselves in their surroundings. Some students choose to take a short term option, in order to return home and prepare for their fall semester. Either program can benefit the student in different ways; however, all of the study abroad programs help students to be more aware of international careers and other cultures. The only advice I have for those applying to the Gilman scholarship is to prepare a well-dictated personal statement. Keep it informative, but concise. I am a University of Utah English major, and my focus is British Studies, particularly Romantic, Victorian, and Renaissance fiction. One of my goals for the future is to write historical fiction set in England, so this trip would certainly be an inspiration for me. I am a senior and will be graduating this summer semester. This study abroad program would fulfill all but one of my remaining upper division English credits as well as the International Requirement for my Bachelor of Arts degree. It would be the perfect finish for my English degree; it is a chance to experience in person the settings of the literature that I have been studying. But even more than that, the London Street Scenes program would be the most amazing experience of my life so far. Whether if I teach in middle or high school, I will create a student government group and we are going to have a raffle every day, which will require students to buy a raffle ticket for twenty-five cents. A large part of the selection process revolves around your follow-on service proposal and how well you can promote the Gilman Scholarship. The scholarship committee wants to see that you have really thought through your service project. If you can state the names of people you plan to work with, dates and other specifics, it shows youve actually planned out what you are going to do. Also, if you have any special skills or talents that you can use to promote the Gilman Scholarship, use them! This is another opportunity for you to get creative and propose a unique project. Whether you need financial support or not, scholarships make studying abroad a more enjoyable experience by easing some of the financial burdens.
