Why context is important essay. Part 1: Why the GAT Matters and How To Use It to Your Advantage

What are you expected to cover/do? (Literary Perspectives Criteria)

This task is designed for you to critically analyse and actively engage with the text, understanding its nuances inside and out in order to decipher its meaning. Be individual in comparing and contrasting the two texts avoid the obvious similarities/differences everyone in your class will also notice. It is the insightful analysis of the subtleties of how meaning is altered that will help you stand out! However, if youre anything like me, then you probably look a bit like this when you begin considering the overall meaning of a text, the authors views and values, and how any three passages in the text create the meaning. This may be classified as Section A on the exam, but it does not have to be completed first, this is up to you! Each essay in the exam is worth 20 marks and will be double marked. The score that each examiner gives you will be added together, so both your final essays will be out of 40.

Luckily, you can learn essay writing with practice and by following some good examples. But before that, you should know how to choose a good and engaging topic for your essay. With zooming in on certain passages in the text (think analysing literary devices, setting, syntax, etc. ) however must also follow zooming out and evaluating their overall meaning, especially in relation to their significance to the prompt.
Writing Task 2 consists of four statements on a contentious issue. Some ofthe issues raised in the past have included: are the elderly wiser than the young?, Who are our heroes?, Whether or not material possessions leads to happiness and more. Below is an example from the 2013 GAT: The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) at Boston University attracts me because of its liberal arts education around a wide array of majors, including biology, neuroscience, and psychology. In fact, the CAS now has a course that combines biology, chemistry, and neuroscience. Im extremely interested in this course because it connects all three forms of science into one class, emphasizing the importance of the cross-disciplinary connections.

Although these things are necessary and important, theyre also often difficult, taxing, and possibly not that interesting. Not too long before the Literature exam, my friend and I were texting, both feeling immense stress and guilt because we felt we hadnt studied enough for the exam, but equally tired and unable to write any practice pieces. Im sure many of you are very familiar with the paradox of not spending time studying because you are instead spending that time worrying about not studying. Certainly, there may be many ways for you to address what, how, and so what, and you may want to explore other ideas, but the above example is just one way to more fully analyze the material. Note that the example above is not formulaic, but if you need help getting started, you could use this template format to help develop your thesis statement. Adrienne Richs poetry is the process of discovering a new psychic geography (When We Dead Awaken) with a language that is refuse[d], ben[t] and torque[d] not to subjugate but as an instrument for connection rather than apartheid. In plain words, your teacher (and eventually examiner in the end of year exam) will give you 3 passages from your text. You'll be asked to read each of these passages, identify key ideas or themes present in each of the passages, and write an essay inresponse. This is what makes writing essays difficult and time-consuming.

Find time to do small things to benefit yourself for the exam without compromising your mental power (after a very long marathon). Good luck and believe in yourself! How to play:1. Find a friend2. Think of a concept, character, quote, theme, literary device (you get the idea)3. Keep your dignity intact!4. Start drawing the idea until your friend eventually guesses (warning: could lead to many failed attempts at drawing foreshadowing)5. Swap and repeat. COMPETENCE. Two aspects that drew my attention to Penns BSN program were its high-quality research opportunities and hands-on nursing projects. Through its Office of Nursing Research, Penn connects students to faculty members who share similar research interests. As I volunteered at a nursing home in high school, I hope to work with Dr. Carthon to improve the quality of care for senior citizens. Seniors, especially minorities, face serious barriers to healthcare that I want to resolve. Additionally, Penns unique use of simulations to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world application impressed me.

Thoughts on the Essay and How It Can Be Improved

Using computerized manikins that mimic human responses, classes in Penns nursing program allow students to apply their emergency medical skills in a mass casualty simulation and monitor their actions afterward through a video system. Participating in this activity will help me identify my strengths and areas for improvement regarding crisis management and medical care in a controlled yet realistic setting. Research opportunities and simulations will develop my skills even before I interact with patients. The overarching themes of the text you are writing from may be recurring, but for every passage from the text that you are given, what you derive from that will be specific to it. Aeschylus Agamemnon was first performed in 458BC, in Ancient Greece, a time vastly different from our own. Therefore, it is important to be aware of how the play was delivered, at the festival of Dionysus as part of a trilogy.

I am particularly interested in CASs research program because it would allow me to work with a mentor on a project, an extremely meaningful experience and preparation since I have a strong interest in conducting medical research. I have already had a taste of research at the college level through my data analysis project on Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). My partner and I extracted data from fMRI and PET studies and inputted them into the coding program Matlab. We then created an indicator map that we imported into another software AFNI to display the significant activity of the brain regions affected by DID. Because I had not taken a computer science or coding class prior to this course, I initially struggled to keep up with the coding processes. However, successfully analyzing these fMRI and PET studies and learning to code drives me to want to conduct more research, and this desire motivates me to study in a research university. CAS and its research opportunities, therefore, would open doors and include firsthand experience in the career I want to pursue. Exams are without a doubt a stressful period of time for all VCE students, and it can be easy to get caught up and overwhelmed with expectations, wanting to prove yourself and balancing the workload of your other exams.

why context is important essay

To take a simple example, a Marxist might look at The Great Gatsby how our capitalistic system underscores the motivations of Gatsby? A feminist might look towards the role of women in the text; are they only supporting characters, or do they challenge traditional gender roles? The biggest issue witheveryliterature student in the exam istiming. Theres always so many things you want to write and include, that it is simply not possible to include everything. Time yourself. Practice writing in timed conditions. Be disciplined with your time going over time for the first essay to include maybe one more good point, is to sacrifice finishing your second essay. The good thing about this approach is that when you understand the general themes that the author covers, you will become better and better at using that lens to identify the most impactful parts of the passage to unpack as you scrutinise the subtle nuances of the writers tone.
