Terry Zwigoff's extraordinary documentary shines on Blu-ray. - A literary essay is a short, non-fiction composition that covers virtually any literary topic imaginable. Authors sometimes write literary essays for reading pleasure rather than to convey a message, and students are often assigned literary essays to assess their knowledge of books or stories they read.
In the work by Howard Zinn, Columbus, The Indians, and Human Progress; and, Dinesh DSouzas, Two Cheers for Colonialism, there is a difference between the two authors perspectives of the subject. The subject being, how far is too far when it comes to the progress of the human race; and, what justifies it. Bother differing in intended audience, though with the purpose of educating. While, both pieces were written around the same time, in the late 20th century. Howard Zinns work is directed towards a more conservative audience; at the time, his work was very controversial for its content around the arrival of Columbus in America. Through Crumbs eyes, life experience, apparently dysfunctional family, and his drawing, the filmmakers explore America from the sixties to the present. Much of Crumbs work is erotic or pornographic by some standards but it has a satirical ring of truth as it represents much in modern life through the filter of the relationship between men and women. Many women find some of Crumbs work offensive and demeaning to women in a some ways. Other women state that they find it empowering. The work could be considered offensive to men as well.
Crumb documentary essay - Since the dawn of the scientific revolution, historical advances has been made for the pursuit of a finer and a stronger understanding of life. But, not all advancements has benefited our society. Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower addressed concerns regarding these developments in his Farewell Address speech. As his final speech as president, he leaves his audience with a message that may have shocked some listeners. Not to mention he also gave his thoughts on how we should go about solving our issues as a nation.
Zwigoff spent six years filming interviews for this movie - centrally with Robert, but also with brothers Charles and Max, wife and fellow cartoonist Aline Kominsky, friends, former lovers, children, fellow cartoonists, and critics. The result is a painfully honest and strangely compelling portrait of a creative but deeply screwed up man. Crumb is well directed by Terry Zwigoff and achieved a screening at Sundance Film Festival, after which it became popular. Cinematography and lighting are excellent. The music appears to be pulled from Robert Crumbs large collection of LPs. It always feels appropriate to the subject. It explores themes such as; National Identity, American Democracy, American Creed, and Democratic Revolution. It also sheds light on the ideology of being born equal, or being made equal. It places emphasizes on the fact that history is often a result of a great impersonal forces and that change can be extremely slow. As the family unravelled, the mother began to take copious amounts of tranquilizers, and she's apparently remained medicated ever since. By the time the movie was filmed the father has been dead for some time, and the drugged packrat mom and manic depressive eldest son live reclusively on in a squalid home with blankets taped to the windows and piles of junk everywhere. The younger brother Max was also a good cartoonist when younger, but he gave it up for painting; a convicted sexual molester who prides himself on never having actually raped, he pursues a yogic existence, meditating for hours on a bed of nails, swallowing linen ropes to clean out his intestines, and taking his begging bowl out each day to support himself. Zwigoff's masterful movie portrays Robert with even-handed sympathy, warts and all. It makes this weirdo who churns out horrifyingly misogynist and racist images look almost well-adjusted, which, in the context of his family, I suppose he is. Zwigoff's great film was, inexplicably, passed up for an Oscar nomination for best documentary - it's said the judges got bored and/or depressed halfway through and turned it off - but it did win him critical acclaim.
As the movie ends, the family is preparing to move to France; Robert was able to buy a house there by selling some of his old notebooks. Robert's largely estranged young adult son hangs around a bit and gets criticized by his dad for his drawings; Robert frets about his record collection being damaged in transit. A postscript to the film relates that, one year after filming ended, Charles finally succeeded in killing himself. The people witnessing the norm did not really have a reaction. Some of them saw me breaking the norm and didnt say anything, and some acted like it was normal. I felt that the people were more comfortable with my partner. When Ali did it, I saw an old lady look at him and, her family didnt really react to him breaking the norm, they probably thought we were some stupid kids playing around or maybe they felt comfortable with him doing it because his Hispanic. There was one man that asked us what floor we were going to, and then he said it doesnt matter your just going to go up and then go down again. After I have finished the book, Whistling Vivaldi, my outlook, on the stereotype threat in the United States, is broadened. Although the book, itself, is quite repetitive, each experiment depicts the clearer understanding of what Steele desires to convey to the readers.
