Hackbright Academys CEO Alice Hill Is Hacking Brogramming Culture One Woman At A Time

I also mentored a Hackbright student for one cohort. Hackbright pairs each student with one or two mentors throughout the course. You meet with them once a week for about an hour. The mentors are from all different levels of experience in the tech industry. It's a chance for students to meet someone in the industry, ask questions, and get help if they need it. I think it was helpful for the person I mentored to meet another Hackbright grad and get advice from someone who had recently gone through the program. I was actually able to help her with her project a little bit too.

Some people believe that development of business results in a loss of cultural ties between countries. Other people contradict this belief. Give your opinion.

Women learn the skills to become full-time software engineers in an environment that prepares them for the workplace. Classes at Hackbright are a blend of lab work and lectures on the principles of computer science and Python coding. At the end of their coursework, the final challenge is for students to craft their own application including determining the actual architecture and implementation of it. I had my heart set on Hackbright Academy for a couple of reasons. As I said, a girl who had gone through it told me really good things about the program. I also really believe that single sex education can be a great thing. I went to an all girls middle school and had a great experience. I was entering an industry where the ratio of women in technical roles is so small, and would be learning all of these new and challenging things, and felt it would be a good environment to be surrounded by women. I also went to some co-ed bootcamp meetups, and felt discouraged by how students interacted. I wanted a really supportive and inclusive learning environment.

Tech firms are looking to women to fill the ranks because of how difficult it is to find good, qualified applicants. Theres a real shortage out there, and women are rising to the challenge. Its both inspiring and a smart business move. I am writing to apply for the position of part-time shop assistant which was advertised in this week's edition of the Frankfurt English News. After a liberal arts degree, Laurel Korwin wasnt sure what career to pursue, so tried her hand at financial research. Living in San Francisco, she eventually transitioned into a technology company but became frustrated that she didnt have the tech skills to solve problems. A friend told her about Hackbright Academy, so she tried out some Python and decided to enroll. Laurel explains why it was important for her to be surrounded by women while learning to code, how she budgeted to get through bootcamp, and how Hackbright Academys careers team worked so hard to help her get her job as a developer at Redfin! Hill commented, At a time when the issue of diversity in tech has never been more crucial to our future, companies are ready for the tremendous opportunity that more women engineers represents. Hackbrights culture stands out for its focus on the tools, guidance, and mentorship to achieve great things and employers see the value in that right away. It did cross my mind.

Everyone is more willing to speak about what they're worried about and ask questions. It felt less competitive in some sense. Everyone was nice to each other. Hackbright Academy is accepting applications from women who are ready to hack brogramming culture one woman at a time. The next fellowship begins August 21. Writers should keep out anything particularly personal that could be difficult or too much information for the reader. Do not include anecdotes. Because the essay is designed to be short and sweet, the writer should go through the writing and take out any extraneous information or run-on sentences. Were looking for women who naturally think like engineers. Hackbright is a place where they can thrive among other bright, ambitious women who want to start successful careers in software development. Its an environment that is tailored to womens instinctive strengths and also the challenges they encounter, said Hill. How did learning in Hackbright's all-women environment compare to your previous educational experiences? A big part of the Hackbright experience is more than just learning to code in a classroom. The support of a web of mentors, alumnae and top-notch instructors, coupled with the all-female composition of the school, means that Hackbright gives students resources and skills that go well beyond graduation.

I honestly didn't think that it would make much of a difference until I actually went through it. That surprised me. It was such a good thing. I realized that having a supportive environment of women was nice. Part of the reason I chose Hackbright was that I figured they would be able to help us navigate how to be women in engineering (which is a male-dominated field) more so than a mixed-gender bootcamp. I am writing to apply for the position of Senior Tour Guide which was advertised in Mondays edition of The Evening News. I loved their interview process. They contacted me and said they were interested in bringing me in for an interview. First I had a phone screening with my manager, which was a more typical coding question. They code in Java, but I went through the process in Python. Once I passed that, I went in for a full day of interviews. It was really progressive compared to other coding questions and interviews Id seen.

Some of these were my general interviews, some were not, but for each, I treated it like I was interviewing them, because I was! Its also a good idea to practice talking about yourself and how you came to be applying to coding bootcamps. Remember the list you made earlier? Aw yeah, mad helpful. I wrote notes during all of these conversations, spent about 5 minutes reflecting on my general impression, and wrote that down too. Its easy to forget your impression unless you put it in writing, especially when names and facts start to blur together. I still keep in touch with a few of my friends from my cohort which is nice. I'm part of the alumni Slack channels which are pretty active. Hundreds of women have gone through this program now. Connecting with that network of Hackbright alumni is inspiring and helpful not necessarily for this job but for future jobs. I'll always have this network that I can rely on. Hackbright Academy is all about countering bro-culture and changing the ratio of women in technology. Women from nearly every walk of life are coming from all over the country to attend the school many of them considering engineering after previous successful career paths. The school, which started in 2012, has graduated more than 500 women from its 12-week full-time fellowships.

On the practical side of things, make sure you feel comfortable with your ability to get through a coding bootcamp, because its an expensive decision. I feel so happy with my decision, but after doing budgetary and technical pre-work I felt comfortable going through the program, and knew I would feel comfortable in the job search. So do your homework in advance to find right program that suits your needs. Alice Hill, Hackbright Academys CEO and a former senior executive at well-known Silicon Valley companies including eBay, CNET, and Slashdot, knows personally what it takes for a woman to blaze a path to the top of the tech world and she is determined to bring more women into the field. Ive been in a room where I was the only woman out of fifteen senior executives, and I asked myself, how did this happen? How do we change it? Hackbright is tackling this issue head on, and were making an impact. It was different because in the engineering field I had become used to being the only woman in a meeting or the only woman in a group working on a project. I had forgotten what it was like to work with all women. There's less pressure. I don't know how to describe it! It feels less intimidating.

I was fortunate to have saved quite a bit of money in my past job. So I had a decent amount in the bank, and I also took out a loan from someone in my personal life. I couldve paid the entire amount from savings, but I was cognizant of the fact that I didnt know how long it would take me to find a job. I put together a spreadsheet looking at how much I could spend per month, because its not only the tuition, its also living expenses you dont get a job on day one after the bootcamp. So I made a thorough plan as to how much I could spend per month, and how long I could afford to be without a job after the program. During the second month, we started our final projects. Some days we'd have lectures. We worked on our project every day to prepare for Demo Day where we would show off our projects to companies who are hiring. The last two weeks were filled with guest lectures.

Students and graduates tap into a network that is a counter to bro-culture itself. We do have a number of women on our engineering teams which is awesome. It's a good sign that this company went to Hackbright to recruit because it means that they are thinking about diversity. I'm still the only woman on my team (which is a small team), but in the overall engineering department there are a number of us. The VP of Engineering seems like he wants to actively continue hiring women and maintaining a diverse group. It makes me feel better to know that the management team is aligned on that. I haven't felt like I'm being treated differently because I'm a woman on the engineering team. That's been pretty great. I am writing to apply for the position of (camp) helper which was advertised in yesterdays edition of The Hatfield Gazette. My next step was gathering questions and having phone calls with my top 4 schools.

I felt it would be a good thing to learn and build on, and it just so happened that Hackbright was teaching it. Graduates have received full-time job offers from companies including Eventbrite, SurveyMonkey, New Relic, GoDaddy, Amazon and Pinterest. The high quality of graduates from Hackbright, which works with hiring partners in the Bay Areas tech-rich job market and across the country to create a pipeline of skilled women coders, means they are often eagerly scooped up by tech firms hungry for talent. Yeah, that was a surprise! I'm very grateful. I had to submit an application form online. I was looking at the financial aid options that Hackbright offered and this was the only scholarship I was eligible for. I figured I'd try for it and see if anything would come of it. I told my story the same way that I told you and I was lucky enough to get it! Hackbrights careers team helped us with our resumés and general goal setting. They helped us figure out what we want out of our careers, and how to choose a good company to work for. We did a lot of technical interview prep through whiteboarding practice.

The application process starts with filling out a form, writing an essay, and being interviewed. Theres also a code challenge which isnt so strange when you consider that most of the women who apply have already learned some coding on their own, whether it was self-taught or through online and traditional classes. This is the part of your assignment in which you need to explain and develop the main ideas of your topic. It comes after the introduction and before the conclusion. Almost always, this is the longest part of the paper. Start each paragraph with a topic sentence, then write down a supporting point for that idea, and end it by elaborating upon that idea (it can be a description, explanation, or example). The program was split into two sections, the first five weeks were lecture and pair programming intensive. Wed have lectures in the morning and the afternoon, and afterwards wed pair on concepts we had learned that day. Lectures were on things like basic concepts in Python, different data structures, and object orientation.

We had two lead instructors who taught the bulk of the lecture. We also had two lab instructors and two TAs. In the first five weeks the lab instructors and TAs came around as we were pair programming, helped us debug, and answered questions. It was really great. During the project season, we had a help queue where someone would come around and help you debug, and that was so nice. Sometimes in my professional life, I wish I still had the help queue. In terms of alumnae, our cohort tries to keep in close touch. We have a cohort Slack channel that we still use, and we try to do happy hours once or twice a month. As far as Hackbright itself, Im mentoring a Hackbright student this quarter as part of Hackbrights mentor program where they pair students with people in the industry. I also participate in the ambassadors program, where Im on call to answer questions from prospective students and go to conferences. Not in particular, but I had been learning Python before I knew that it was taught at Hackbright Academy. My partner is an engineer, and from his advice, I came to the conclusion that Python is one of the most beginner friendly languages. Its intuitive, things make sense, and there arent a lot of mid-advanced level concepts that you have to understand to start coding.

Guests would talk to us about people networking, computer networking, salary negotiations, micro-services, security, and all sorts of other topics. They were high-quality technical and practical lectures from awesome speakers. Find out more and read Hackbright Academy reviews on Course Report. Check out the Hackbright Academy website. Maybe. But, honestly, not as quickly. Hackbright provided a lot of resources and support. Having the condensed three months of learning was hard but also pushed me in a good way. I wouldn't have necessarily gotten that momentum by teaching myself. Having structure and external influence to help move you along is key.

In the second half of the program we had lectures in the morning, then would work on our capstone projects for the rest of the day. In that section we learned about developer tool boxes: APIs, different tools you could use, as well as core CS concepts like linked lists, and recursion. We also had mentors working in the tech field whom we met with once a week. We also visited a few companies to see their offices and practice interviews with their employees. It was cool to interact with actual engineers in the field! Lastly, we presented our final project at Demo Day at the end of the bootcamp. Hackbright invites companies that are looking to hire. Making connections at Demo Day was extremely helpful. She points to the fact that diverse engineering teams are not just important because they bring greater balance and perspective to projects, but its just good business to bring women on board because the industry is experiencing a skills gap right now.
