Often we do not understand how necessary this obedience is for us, unless we also consider how eader out flesh is to shake off the yoke of the lord as soon as we have been treated with some tenderness and indulgence. (52). Calvin believes that naturally people act out of accordance with the scriptures. Obedience to god consumes ones mind and does not allow the normal joys of life to reign. Calvins views not only make it hard for people to enjoy life, they also disapprove of it. Therefore, if the earthly life be compared to the heavenly, it should undoubtedly be despised and counted as a failure. (75). Calvin saw life on earth as preparation for life in heaven. The only point of living on earth was showing god that you were worthy of living in heaven when you died. This view of earthly life not only discourages joy, but also makes it seem pointless. Calvins views on how a christian should live their life; with unwavering, perfect obedience to god and the scriptures, doesnt allow for people to find joy in living their lives on earth. Francis Bacon, philosopher The Golden Booklet of the True Christian Life, by John Calvin, is a guide on how to properly live life as a Christian (according to John Calvin). Throughout this book Calvins puritanical viewpoints are very evident. The amount of self discipline he expects people to have in life makes it impossible for them to enjoy is because Calvin doesnt allow for people to make mistakes while serving the lord, to never falter in their obedience, and that life on earth should not be enjoyed at all. Calvin doesnt allow for people to make mistakes and warns people to be cautious of all of their actions. Only if we walk in the beauty of Gods law do we become sure of our adoption as children of the Father (Calvin 15). Here Calvin explains that only if people obey gods rules will they be accepted as his children and enter the kingdom of heaven. When people are constantly worried about being perfect in following gods laws it takes away from the joy of living life the way humans do; imperfectly. Calvin believes that our obedience to the lord must never falter, which causes people to be constantly obsessed with the thought of being obedient to god.
