The business culture is taking over the world today, and with it comes quite a lot of issues and concerns in how we go about our daily activity. June 2002 - The importance of language management in multinational companies has never been greater than today. Multinationals are becoming ever more conscious of the importance of global co-ordination as a source of competitive advantage, and language remains the ultimate barrier to aspirations of international harmonization. Building on the strongly discrepant views of expatriates and HCEs, we demonstrate how expatriates willingness to learn and use the host country language lead to different types of expatriate-HCE relationships, ranging from harmonious to distant or segregated. In doing so, we emphasize the subtle and fragile connection between expatriates attitude towards HCEs mother tongue and trust formation in addition to the construction of superiority-inferiority relationships.



Research implications/limitations: Our model provides a solid grounding for future research on selecting the most effective organizational actions and designing supportive measures to disrupt the persistent dynamics contributing to womens underrepresentation in IAs. Future research could also expand our study by incorporating individual differences and the proactive role that women may take. July 2001 - This study investigates executive staffing practices in foreign subsidiaries of MNCs. Firmly grounded in a literature review of the reasons for employing either PCNs (parent country nationals) or HCNs (host country nationals) in top management positions in foreign subsidiaries, a number of factors influencing the choice between these alternatives is identified. Using a combination of an archival and mail survey research method, the influence of each of these factors is empirically tested with a sample of nearly 3000 observations.

October 2004 - After the enlargement of the European Union (EU) with ten new countries on the 1st of May 2004, international labour mobility within the EU has become a rather contentious issue. January 2015 - We draw on social identity theory to conceptualize a moderated mediation model that examines the relationship between shared language among subsidiary and HQ managers, and subsidiaries knowledge inflows from HQ. August 2019 - The field of cross-cultural leadership has seen a boom in empirical research over the last few decades, yet we know very little about actual leadership behavior. Extant research has provided knowledge and awareness about differences and similarities in leadership attitudes, ideals, perceptions and preferences across countries and cultures. Managers sources of guidance and handling of events have also been studied, but to predict leadership behavior remains difficult. January 2020 - In this special issue, we continue the critical perspectives and conversations that critical perspectives on international business (cpoib) promotes by reflecting on the nature and impact of contemporary international business (IB) activities around the globe from inter-, trans- and multidisciplinary perspectives. The journal places a special emphasis on scholarly works that question the hegemony of multinational enterprises (MNEs) and that evaluate the effects of their IB activities on the global economy and national societies (cpoib, n. d. ). Hence, for this special issue we invited submissions of articles that address the theme: Do MNEs contribute to or reduce global inequality?. Here, the term inequality refers to various societal and economic phenomena inside or across nation states, such as income, gender, social class, economic conditions, and welfare.

International business research papers - June 2016 - We address the lack of knowledge concerning the role of host country languages in multinational corporations based on an inductive qualitative study involving 70 interviews with Nordic expatriates and host country employees (HCE) in China.

June 2013 - The management of human resources in headquarters (HQ)-subsidiary relationships requires intensive communication, but effective communication often depends on having a shared language. Hence, language differences can be a serious threat to the successful management of human resources in multinational corporations (MNCs). In this large-scale quantitative study, encompassing data from more than 800 subsidiaries in thirteen countries, we investigated four related issues. We tested this hypothesis with a sample of 3,419 undergraduate students in 24 countries. Half of the students in each country received an English-language questionnaire, while the other half received the same questionnaire in their native language. Drawing on the resource-based view and resource dependency theory, this paper aims to provide an insight into the interplay of several corporate-level organisational factors that affect the transfer of HRM practices across borders. Data collected from 80 European and US MNCs with subsidiaries in Greece is used to test specific hypotheses.
